GREENER HOLBROOK, GREENER WORLD

GHGW

This is a community-led group, under the umbrella of the Parish Council, aiming to give information and suggest ideas about caring for the environment and living sustainably, and aiming to create opportunities for individual and collective action in the face of climate changes.

Members of the community are very welcome to come along to meetings, usually every 2nd Monday of the month, to share ideas and to get involved.

INITIATIVES IN DISCUSSION:

1)    How to protect and enhance the natural environment:

a)    Developing Community spaces including wildflower gardens, untidy spaces, tree stumps, more trees

b)    The creation of a community orchard

c)     Promoting biodiversity by creating bug hotels, hedgehog highways, bird boxes

d)     Publicising “Every Garden Matters”

e)     Supporting local ventures dealing with reducing, recycling and minimising waste:

2)    How to reduce energy consumption:

a)     House and home – e.g. insulation, water saving, heating, glazing

b)     Food and farming – e.g. consider food miles, eating less meat, support the community by buying local and seasonal produce

c)     Travel – e.g. reduce air miles, use public transport, car share, work from home

3)     How to promote the 5R’s

         i)     REFUSE: freebies, bags etc = no need to dispose of them.

ii)     REDUCE: Buy less, if possible don’t buy it. Maybe rent or share?

iii)     REUSE: replace single use items with multiple use items

iv)     REPAIR: Fight against the culture of “throw away and buy a new one”.

        v)     RECYCLE: think about how and where

 4)     How can we adapt to future climate change

Come and join us - together we can make a difference.
